Frequently Ask Questions

Does my son have to attend St Peters Methodist Church or be a student at Pattison Elementary to join Pack 209?
No.  Your son only needs to be in first through fifth grade to join cub scouts.  We welcome any scout that has a desire to learn about the scouting lifestyle regardless of which school or church they may attend.

Can my son join part-way through the school year?
Yes, but in order to "cross over" to the higher rank with the other boys in his den, he may have to do some additional work on his own.

If my son didn't sign up in first grade, is it too late to join scouting?
No.  Your son can sign up at any time in first through fifth grade.

Will I be required to participate in fundraising?
Our pack sells popcorn in order to help defer the cost of camping trips, scout parties and other activities.  You will have the option of donating a set amount if you do not want to participate in fundraising.

Do I have to belong to a certain faith to join scouting?
No.  All scouts are taught to respect and understand the faiths of others.

Why join scouts?

Study results from Louis Harris and Associates show that Scouts with at least five years in our program are more likely than boys who have never been Scouts to:

·         Take leadership roles in clubs or school organizations,

·         Put the needs of others before their own,

·         Have higher self-confidence,

·         Be active in a variety of after-school activities, and

·         Resist peer pressure to take part in delinquent or dishonest activities.

Boys in Scouting say the program has taught them to give their best effort, always be honest and respect others. These values have been proven to lead to greater success in adulthood. The same Louis Harris study finds that men who were Scouts for at least five years were more likely to:

·         Graduate from high school and college,

·         Earn higher annual household incomes,

·         Value family relationships highly,

·         Attend religious services,

·         Have lifelong friendships,

·         Believe helping others should come before one's own self-interest.

Plus it's fun!!
