Boy Scouting is a membership level of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) for boys and young men. It provides youth training in character, citizenship, and mental and personal fitness. Boy Scouts are expected to develop personal religious values, learn the principles of American heritage and government, and acquire skills to become successful adults.

To achieve these, Boy Scouting applies eight methods of Scouting: Ideals (viz., the Scout Oath, the Scout Law, the Scout Motto, and the Scout Slogan), the patrol method, participation in outdoor programs, advancement, adult association, personal growth, leadership development, and the uniform.

Boy Scouting is generally available to boys between the ages of 10 and eighteen. They are organized in Scout troops, administered by volunteers with support of paid professional staff. Youth and adult members are Scouts, the boys are referred to as Boy Scouts, and the adults as Scouters.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the Church are rightly responsible for molding young black men into adult leaders. BSA troops have produced distinguished African-American scouts like retired four-star general Colin Powell, six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker.

African American participation in the Boy Scout movement dates back to 1911, and its impact has not only forced the integration of young black males into the organization, but also continues to address many of the challenges these young males confront today.

With young African-American males (particularly those in urban communities) at much higher risks for incarceration, gang violence, unemployment, fatherlessness and substance abuse, the BSA has been a source of constant and consistent strong positive male figures for these young black boys.

Like many BSA troops, African-American troops are often strongly affiliated with community churches.

About Us

Troop 779 was started in September 2011 at St. George Episcopal Church and Community Center, it was chartered in 2012 with cub scouts turned boy scouts from Cub Scout Pack's 791(Mangonia Park) and 779(Riviera Beach). This unit is small with a hunger to grow. Under the leadership and concern of the scout leadership, a young person may be helped with his personal and spiritual needs.  This guidance can range from answering simple questions to serving as a father-image for the child of a single-parent family.  This brings youth and their families to a program where they are motivated and deeply interested in being a part of something much bigger than themselves.  Service to others and faith in God are foundations of this program.  It is true that the boys come to Scouting for the excitement and high adventure activities and through the good turns of the Scouting Program as they give service and grow in their faith.
