What is Boy Scouting?

The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young boys that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

For over a century, the BSA has helped build the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes — and, through over a century of experience, knows — that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.

What age can my son join Troop 15?
If he is in cub scouts and has earned the Arrow of  Light award then he can join at age 10 1/2.
Otherwise, your child can join if he has finished the 5th grade and is 11 years old.

How much does it cost? Are there dues?
Troop 4015  collects monthly dues of $10 from each scout. Your scout will also be charged for recharter each year. No need to worry about all these fees! Troop 4015 offers many opportunities year round for scouts to earn money.

Are there other costs?
Your scout's patrol will charge a fee to cover food, fuel and camping fees.  If the trip is especially long, or requires traveling many miles, or otherwise unusually expensive the fee may be more. No need to worry about all these fees! Troop 4015 offers many opportunities year round for scouts to earn money.

Are uniforms required and how much do they cost?
Although there is no time requirement for purchasing uniforms.  Each Scout will receive a troop t-shirt, also known as a "Class B", but they are encouraged to obtain their uniform as soon as possible.  If there is a monetary hardship, we can help. Shirts including all the required patches generally run around $50.00.

When and where do you have your meetings?
We meet every Wednesday from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church at 2796 Charlestown Road, in New Albany. We welcome visitors and everyone is invited to come and see what scouting is all about.

How often do you go camping?
Boys love to camp so we try to go at least once a month if possible.  We camp all year around.  Our trips are usually Friday night to Sunday morning, but each trip varies in length.

How often are the meetings?
Troop 15 meets every Wednesday from 7:00pm-8:30pm. If NAFCS are canceled due to weather, our meeting will also be canceled.

How can I learn more?
The best way to learn about what a Boy Scout really does is to talk with a Boy Scout who is engaged in the program. Alternatively, you can learn more about Troop 4015 by selecting "Contact Our Troop " (above) and asking questions, or leave your phone number to receive a call from the Scoutmaster.

I signed up to be a Boy Scout, but I heard there are other age-appropriate programs. What are they?

Venturing

Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women ages 13 (and have completed eighth grade) or 14 through 20.

Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

Venturing is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth, adult leaders, and organizations in their communities. Local community organizations establish a Venturing crew by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of exciting and meaningful activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, develop leadership skills, and become good citizens.

How often will I meet with the other Scouts?

Boy Scouts meet in a patrol once each week at their troop meeting. Beyond that, it depends on the patrol and troop. A troop may hold a special activity, such as a service project or outdoor experience, in place of one of the weekly meetings or in addition to the weekly meetings.

What is the responsibility of a parent of a new Boy Scout?

Boy Scout patrol and troop meetings are intended to be an activity for you. They are not a family activity, and the presence of parents can be a distraction. However, parental involvement is not forbidden. If your parent or guardian would like to be present at a troop meeting, ask your Scoutmaster in advance so the leader can plan a way for your parent or guardian to observe or participate. There are always ways for your parent or guardian to be involved, such as reviewing the handbook with you to help you earn your next rank.

Tell me about the leaders and how they are selected.

All Scouting units are chartered to a local organization. The chartered organization serves as a sponsor of Scouting and is essentially the owner/operator of the Scouting unit. In this role, the head of the organization approves all adult volunteer leaders. All leaders are required to take our child safety course called “Youth Protection,” and specific training for their role in Scouting is available either online or in a classroom setting. To help the organization maintain a quality program, there is a person assigned to be a liaison between the unit and the chartered organization. In addition, every unit has a committee (typically made up of Scouting parents) that oversees proper operation and ensures a safe and fun program.

What supplies and equipment are needed?

The single most important piece of equipment you will need is the Boy Scout Handbook. A local Scout shop is the best place to buy a handbook, and the staff there can guide you to get exactly what you need. Find your local Scout shop.

The uniform is also very important as it plays an essential role in creating a sense of belonging, and it’s where a Scout gets to display his awards and rank achievements. Check out the interactive uniform builder at www.bsauniforms.org. When you’re ready, you can order online, or get the address of your local Scout shop and then head on over and shop in person.

Additional supplies and equipment may be needed for certain activities such as camping trips or field days. What equipment is needed, as well as whether it will be provided by your troop, will vary. Unit leaders will provide you with information about any required supplies at the beginning of each program year. It is important to note that the annual registration fee to be a member of any BSA program is only $24. However, most units will require additional fees to cover the cost of certain activities and program supplies. Your leader can explain all the details about the unit’s annual fee and exactly what it includes. We are confident you will find the value of the program exceeds the typical fees charged.

Is Scouting safe?

Yes. The BSA knows that a safe environment and program for every boy is important, and that is why we have designed our programs to follow a strict set of rules and policies that can be found in our Guide to Safe Scouting. We also require every registered adult in Scouting to complete our Youth Protection training course and a criminal background check. If you would like to know more about Scouting’s Youth Protection program, click here.

Whom do I call for help?

Your patrol leader is your first resource if you have any questions. You can then have a discussion with your senior patrol leader and then finally your Scoutmaster.

What’s next?

If you have not already received a calendar of activities with scheduled meeting dates and times, contact your patrol leader or senior patrol leader at your next troop meeting. Who is responsible for updating our website within my pack, troop, or crew?

A little history…

Overall scout websites have only a 26% survival rate per year. Most of these websites are maintained by a single Web Master (administrator). The Web Master driven website causes a bottle neck effect when it comes to updating content and events. Then when that Web Master moves on to other things the site eventually dies because nobody is there to take their position.

ScoutLander was designed to fix this problem by getting everyone involved in the beginning. We have found that the best people to maintain website integrity are not the people who organize the events but the people who rely on the information. The content is the responsibility of the leaders in Cub Scouts and in Boy Scouts it is the boys themselves who take over website maintenance.

Depending on the size of your pack you may also want to give your parents the ability to update content because they will become the future leaders and if they are familiar with the website this transition becomes easier.

Why is my site not listed in the directory?

  • Trial Mode - You are still in your 30 day trial mode.
  • Pending Approval - You have subscribed but it is pending. Wait 24 hrs till your account is authorized.

Security and Privacy?

Every user in your unit will be provided a unique username and password to access secure site resources. Only authenticated users for your unit will have access to secured resources such as: names and contact information, event information, photos, and knowledgebase articles.
